Summer hair

Now that the sun has been shining in Boston lately, and my Greece countdown is less than 2 weeks away (!!!!), I’ve been thinking about different summer hairstyles and products that work well with the heat.  Here’s what I’ve come up with:

Lauren Conrad keeps her hair out of her face and stays cute with a trendy little French braid.

I love the side fishtail-braid look for breezy beach days or summer BBQ’s. Check out this step-by-step guide from Seventeen Magazine!

There are tons of ways you can play with braids this summer – Kim Kardashian and Nicole Richie show off two fun styles.

Headbands are timeless–wear one to the gym to add a touch of femininity to your workout gear, or pair one with a cute summer outfit for a chic, polished look.

Rocking a sleek pony tail is a good way to beat the heat while creating a sexy, sophisticated look. Tease just the crown of your head, like Jennifer Aniston, for subtle volume.

If sleek isn’t your thing, try a wavy side ponytail  like Lindsay Lohan. Wrap a piece of your hair around the hair-tie for a look that’s even more chic.

And of course, you can always sport Cali-girl beach waves in the summertime. Beach waves are super sexy and so easy to create because their very nature is to be messy. To get Julia Roberts’ effortless waves, massage any volumizing product into towel-dried roots. Apply a small amount of styling cream to your ends, twisting hair into different sections. Then, scrunch your hair while blow-drying to create volume an d texture.  Finally, wrap some sections around a medium-sized curling iron and lightly run your fingers through your hair. You can even find products specifically designed for creating beach waves, like this one by Frederic Fekkai.

As far as hair products, it usually depends on the type of hair that you have.

To fight frizz, try Ouidad Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel ($9 for 2.5oz. at Sephora.com). This heat-activated styling product protects, hydrates, and nourishes hair for smooth, shiny results – even  in the worst weather conditions.

For boosted volume, use Soma Hair Technology “Hot Body” Volumizing Gel ($16 at MySomaHair.com). This alcohol-free blow-dry gel will enhance volume and bounce despite the efforts of humidity to weigh your hair down.

For all hair types, be sure to use a summer spritz like Aveda’s Sun Care Protective Hair Veil ($26 at Aveda.com). This water-resistant UV defense mist protects hair from sun exposure for 16 hours, working to minimize color fadage, damage and dryness.

And finally, do you ever feel the need to refresh, revive, and rejuvenate your hair but don’t have the time to wash it, or don’t have access to water and a blow-dryer? Try Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo ($19 for 2.5oz. at Sephora.com). The product soaks up oil, removes product build-up, and boosts volume. Because who has time to shower on vacay? ;)

Enjoy the sun!

Candy colored locks

Katy Perry's candy-coated look

Katy Perry has taken hair coloring to a whole new level, often mixing in shades of pink, blue, and purple with her shiny, raven-colored hair. While I adore her quirky & sassy sense of style, I feel like she might be the only person in the world that can pull it off. That being said, sometimes it’s better to tweak certain celebrity trends in order to make a chic, bold statement without overdoing it.  For instance, try adding a couple funky-colored highlights to your hair in just one color instead of three different shades. Last Fall I had my aunt (who’s also a hair stylist) put some purple highlights in my hair and loved it! It added the perfect amount of spunk and edge to my look, and it could only be seen in certain lighting.

My hair with subtle purple highlights

I am definitely planning on recreating this look for the summer months ahead. This time, however, I will probably get clip-in colored hair extensions instead of actually coloring my hair. That way, I won’t have to damage my hair or worry about it growing out. Also, it’ll be a little brighter and I’ll be able to switch up my look rather than being stuck with purple highlights all the time. You can find clip-in hair extensions at stores like Sally Beauty Supply, or you can ask your stylist to give you real hair extensions for sass that’s more permanent.

Here are a couple other celebrity starlets who gave this look a go:

Rihanna with purple highlights (and bangs!) LOVE this look :)

Rachel McAdams went girly with pink highlights

Lady Gaga is ga-ga for color

So what do you think, is this trend sassy or trashy?

From lifeless locks to super posh

Maybe she's born with it...

Maybe she’s born with it…  or maybe not! Have you ever thought about getting hair extensions? How about a body wave perm? We all want to rock a full, gorgeous mane. But before you do either of those things (which can be extremely damaging and expensive), try this simple blow-dry regimen that is bound to transform your lackluster hair into strands of volume and oomph. It’s straight from a professional hair stylist’s mouth—and seriously, it works!

  1. Section damp hair.
  2. Apply root lifter or volume mousse spray to roots and lightly massage into scalp.
  3. Starting with the lower sections of hair, use a round vent brush and blow-dryer to dry hair in the opposite way that it grows (i.e., dry the lower sections upwards, the crown forwards, and the front backwards).
  4. Roll hair into round brush and hold as you blow-dry (picture how a hot roller holds a section of hair). Then use your blow-dryer’s “cool” setting to cool hair and release.
  5. Lightly smooth over with your fingers and apply a small amount of hair spray.
  6. Enjoy the new, glamorous you!

This has become my new blow-dry routine and I’ve received a lot of positive feedback. The best part is that you don’t even need damaging heat tools like a straightener or curling iron to look and feel glam–you just blow-dry, and go!

Out with a BANG!

Me (right) with bangs!

As trends come and go, hairstyles go in and out of style. One particular trend that seems to always make its way back to the limelight is the fabulous full bang. Full bangs are the perfect way to add a bit of glam and feminine edge to any hairstyle. Since I’ve recently jumped on the bang-wagon (see above), I thought it would be fun to check out which celebrity-trendsetters pull off the rock n’ roll look best.

First and foremost is my own personal inspiration, Katy Perry. Katy’s retro-sweet vibe dazzles her millions of fans and contributes to her overall sweet-and-sassy look.

Zooey Deschanel rocks bangs as her signature look, and is completely adored for her girlish spunk and quirky charm. (Is it just me, or do Zooey and Katy look like long-lost sisters?)

Rihanna has been known to pull off bangs with a smoking-hot, bad*** vibe.

Sienna Miller’s honey-colored, lash-grazing bangs look stunning and feminine. They are slightly angled on the sides to frame her face, making them easier to wear.

Vanessa Hudgens’ looks super-cute with shaggy, hipster bangs.

Nicole Richie is nothing but glam with her chic and shiny side-swept bangs.

So there you have it. Hollywood’s hottest leading ladies have set the trend for bangs over and over again, from retro-sweet locks to rock star vibes.

When my 4-year-old niece saw a picture of my new hairstyle, she gleefully said, “Aunty B looks like Dora!” Apparently even Dora the Explorer knows what’s up when it comes to fashion… ;)
